With this prize, the foundation promotes work that contributes to scientific, technical or economic progress in livestock farming. The goal is to improve the nutrition of farm animals or the products they produce. In 1996, Windisch already received the foundation's "Förderpreis", which is awarded to aspiring scientists.
About Prof. Wilhelm Windisch
Prof. Wilhelm Windisch has conducted research into the nutrition of livestock for animal foodstuffs. He concentrates on functional food ingredients, the use of biogenic (residual) substances from new technologies as animal feed and nutrient conversion in the metabolism of livestock through to the environmental impact of feeding.
After studying agricultural science, Prof. Windisch obtained his doctorate in 1988 and habilitated at TUM in 1995. Prior to his professorship at TUM, he was Professor of Animal Nutrition at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna from 2002 to 2010. Prof. Windisch is a member of the Society for Nutritional Physiology (GfE) and other relevant scientific societies. He retired in August 2022 as part of the partial retirement scheme.
History of the foundation
In 1955, at its annual meeting in Goslar, the professional association of compound feed manufacturers in Germany - at that time still under the name Fachverband der Futtermittelindustrie e. V., based in Hamburg - decided to establish a science prize for outstanding achievements in the field of animal nutrition and feed science. The Henneberg-Lehmann Foundation was established in the same year for this purpose and in memory of the achievements of Wilhelm Henneberg (1825 - 1890), the founder of scientific animal nutrition, and his student and successor, Franz Lehmann (1860 - 1942). Since then, the Henneberg-Lehmann Prize of the same name has been awarded in close cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture at the Georg August University in Göttingen.
