Needs of livestock
recognize - understand - act

9. Agrarwissenschaftliches Symposium am 27. September 2018
This year everything revolved around livestock with the theme "Needs of livestock: recognize - understand - act".
Prof. Brem introduced the topic with a review of "Ten thousand years of humans and livestock" and the bridge to today's livestock husbandry. The lecture by Prof. Troxler was devoted in particular to the topic of animal-environment interactions and placed the terms needs, behavior, husbandry systems and animal welfare in a larger context. In her presentation, Prof. Schmicke dealt with the use of biomarkers in livestock practice and showed which metabolic markers are already in use and where the potential and opportunities for future developments lie. Prof. Krieter focused on health monitoring based on animal behavior. He presented various sensor systems that can support livestock owners in their health management by measuring activity and eating behavior. Ms. Trost from the Max Planck Institute in Seewiesen reported on her behavioral research work on songbirds. Here, the behavior of free-flying songbirds in the aviary and in the field was recorded and quantified with the smallest sensors. Dr. Thiess from Pivita AG presented a diagnostic device for the non-invasive measurement of vital signs in horses. In his lecture, Prof. Rigoll gave an insight into the possibilities for recognizing human actions using methods of pattern recognition and machine learning. In the concluding panel discussion with all speakers and the audience, it was shown how much has already been done in animal husbandry in terms of animal welfare, but also how much still needs to be put into research, training practitioners and educating consumers. The event was moderated by Mr. Chmura from Bayerischer Rundfunk.
